Frozen Confectionery

Japan has a range of frozen confectionery that does not contain dairy products and which appears to be vegan, although some foods contain flavouring and emulsifiers which may be animal-derived or sugar that may be bone-char processed. We have marked below wherever we have information on how these ingredients were made.

Below are some examples.

Adzuki Bar. Ingredients: Sugar, adzuki beans, starch syrup, cornstarch (non-genetically modified), salt.

Akagi Gari Gari Kun Pear Ice Block. Ingredients: High fructose corn syrup, sugar, pear juice, apple juice, starch syrup, liqueur, salt, flavouring, stabilising agent (pectin), acidity regulator, caramel colour. Note: manufactured in a facility that also makes products containing milk and egg.

Akagi Gari Gari Kun Samurai Blue Ice Block. Ingredients: High fructose corn syrup, sugar, apple juice, glucose, lime juice, starch syrup, liqueur, salt, flavouring, stabilising agent (pectin), colouring (spirulina blue, safflower yellow), acidity regulator. Note: manufactured in a facility that also makes products containing milk and egg.

Family Mart sells boxes of 12 fruit bars (orange, grape and apple) without milk, egg or gelatin.

• Fruit Bars with Fruit Juice/ 果汁入りフルーツバー. Contains three flavors, orange, grape, and apple. Ingredients: (Orange bars): Orange juice, sugar, starch syrup, acidulant, stabilising agent (thickening polysaccharides), flavouring, paprika pigment, carotene pigment. (Grape bars): Grape juice, sugar, starch syrup, stabilising agent (thickening polysaccharides), acidulant, flavouring, grape pigment. (Apple bars): apple juice, sugar, starch syrup, acidulant, stabilising agent (thickening polysaccharides), flavouring, gardenia pigment. Does not contain any of the seven most common allergens. The three flavors are manufactured on the same equipment.

NON-DAIRY ICE CREAMS

Non-dairy, plant-milk based ice creams can be found in small, local or regional natural food shops such as Natural House or Kodawariya. There are also a few choices, Kracie and Topvalu, that can be found nationwide in regular grocery stores.

Kracie Soy Vanilla ice cream Ingredients: Soya milk (including soybeans), starch syrup, sugar, melon juice, vegetable oils and fats, starch hydrolyzate, mirin, salt / emulsifier, stabilizer (thickening polysaccharide), flavourings, trehalose (allergen warning: contains soy)

Kracie Soy Chocolate ice cream Ingredients: Soya milk (including soybeans), starch syrup, sugar, vegetable oil, cacao mass, cocoa powder, salt / emulsifier, flavourings, stabilizer (thickening polysaccharide), trehalose (allergen warning: contains soy)

Kracie Soy Strawberry ice cream Ingredients: Soya milk (including soybeans), starch syrup, sugar, strawberry pulp, vegetable oil, glucose fructose liquid sugar, salt / flavourings (apple origin), acidulant, stabilizer (thickening polysaccharide), coloring agent (red mold-Monascus purpureus) (allergen warning: contains soy and apple)

These Kracie ice creams are confirmed not to use animal ingredients and not to use bone char to produce the white sugar.

Topvalu (Aeon house brand) has an almond-based ice cream, however, they use a pork-based emulsifier in their almond milk, so it’s possible that this ice cream may use the same emulsifier.

Topvalu Almond Maple Vanilla ice cream Ingredients: Almond processed product, starch syrup, sugar, vegetable fat and oil, maple syrup, caramel sauce (sugar), salt / stabilizer (polysaccharide thickener), emulsifier, flavourings, trehalose (includes soybeans as part of ingredients)

GELATO

Lotte sometimes produces ice creams and gelatos that may be vegan. They currently have a Fuji apple and a mango gelato cup that don’t have any dairy, egg, milk, honey or gelatin.

Gelato Marche Fuji Apple/ジェラートマルシェ ふじりんご Ingredients: Apple juice (100% Fuji apples), starch syrup, sugar, isomerized glucose syrup, vegetable oil / stabilizer (polysaccharide thickener), acidulant, flavouring, emulsifier.

Gelato Marche Mango/ジェラートマルシェ マンゴー Ingredients: Mango puree, sugar, mango juice, isomerized glucose syrup, starch syrup, vegetable oil / fat / stabilizer (thickening polysaccharide), emulsifier, acidulant, flavouring, paprika pigment

Uses 25% mango juice and pulp for a rich mango flavor.

The other flavors of the same gelato, including strawberry and raspberry, have dairy.
