The offshoot of Lawson convenience stores called Natural Lawson is probably the best convenience store for vegans. Although a few products from Natural Lawson can be found in regular Lawson stores, it’s worth it to go to Natural Lawson if there are any near you. Natural Lawson stores are currently located in the following areas: Chiba Prefecture, Saitama Prefecture, Kanagawa Prefecture, and Tokyo. Not all products below can be found at all stores.

Let’s begin with some items that could be used to cook a meal. 

The Asahico Toffu Protein Yakiniku (Grilled “Meat”) doesn’t show anything that can definitely be said to be of animal origin on the ingredient lists, but lacks vegan certification. There’s a possibility it does contain animal products off-label. Another possibility is that the items may use use bone-char processed sugar, which would make them ineligible for VegeProject vegan certification. Check the details of said certification on VegeProject’s website.

The Asahico Toffu Protein Yakiniku (Grilled “Meat”) contains brewed vinegar/醸造酢/jyōzōsu, which can sometimes contain honey according to the Japan Vinegar Institute Headquarters.

Two items in Asahico’s Toffu Protein line are certified vegan by VegeProject Japan. They are both tofu rice (like a tofu version of cauliflower rice, where the ingredient is chipped small to imitate a rice grain). One was seen at Natural Lawson, the Asahico Toffu Protein Tofu Rice with Pearl Barley/Asahico Toffu Protein. 

• Asahico Toffu Protein Tofu Rice with Pearl Barley/Asahico Toffu Protein 豆腐のごはんもち麦入り. Ingredients: Whole soybeans (from America, not genetically modified), barley (pearl barley), salt/coagulant (magnesium chloride (nigari)), anti-foaming agent (glycerin fatty acid ester).

Made by the same company in charge of the Chaya Macrobiotics restaurants. Although the restaurants serve fish, according to their website’s Q&A, all of their manufactured products are 100% plant-derived and don’t use white sugar. Photo taken in April 2021.

• Chaya Macrobiotics Minestorone/チャヤマクロビのミネストローネ. Ingredients: Vegetables (onion, carrot, cabbage), kelp dashi, diced tomato, roasted onion, starch syrup, pumpkin paste, carrot paste, ume vinegar, garlic paste, olive oil, ginger paste, potato starch, salt, yeast extract, kelp powder, spice.

Artificial flavorings, preservatives, artificial colorings and white sugar are not used.

The Chaya Macrobiotics Pumpkin Stew was spotted in May 2021. The front of the package says “gluten-free” in Japanese. The cross-contamination information for the product is taken from the product page on the Chaya Macrobiotics website. 

• Chaya Macrobiotics Pumpkin Stew/チャヤマクロビの米粉でつくった甘くてとろけるかぼちゃのシチュー. Ingredients: Vegetables (pumpkin, carrots, onions, eringi mushrooms), kelp soup stock (kelp (domestically produced)), pumpkin paste, roasted onions, coconut milk, chickpeas, rice flour, vegetable bouillon, coconut oil, rapeseed oil, beet sugar, garlic paste, salt, yeast extract, pepper.

Manufactured with the same equipment as products including egg, milk, wheat, buckwheat, peanut, shrimp, crab, squid, orange, beef, walnut, mackerel, soybean, chicken, pork, banana, peach, yam, apple, gelatin, sesame, cashew nut.

   

This Strong Heart curry was seen in April 2021.

• Strong Heart Spicy Vegan Beans Curry/トマトと赤インゲン豆のスパイシーなビーガンカレー. Ingredients: Onion paste (from Hokkaido), tomato paste, red kidney beans, vegetable bouillon, mixed spices (turmeric, cumin powder, coriander, garam masala, cayenne pepper), garlic, ginger, olive oil, dried vegetables (onions, potatoes, carrots, green onions, celery, parsley), salt.

Manufactured on common equipment with items containing wheat, eggs, milk, shrimp, crab, beef, pork, chicken, mackerel, banana, orange, soybean, and sesame.

   

This made-in-Sri Lanka curry was also seen in April 2021. It says “no animal ingredients” in Japanese, doubutsusei genzairyou fushiyou/動物性原材料不使用, on the front of the package. 

• The Third World Shop Chickpea Curry/ほくっとひよこ豆カレー. Ingredients: Coconut milk, chickpeas, coconut oil, onions, spices, tomato paste, brewed vinegar, salt, raw sugar, rice. 

Products including shrimp and soybeans are manufactured using common equipment. 

   

The front of the package of the following gapao and keema curry say “animal ingredients not used” in Japanese, doubutsusei yurai no genryou fushiyou/動物性由来の原料不使用. They also indicate that the products contains no meat, fish, or egg. They were spotted in the refrigerated section in a branch of Natural Lawson in November 2020. 

•  Toyo Corp. Soymeat and Vegetable Gapao/トーヨーコーポレーション　大豆ミートと野菜でつくったガパオ. Ingredients: Green peppers (Portugal), sauteed onion, granulated vegetable protein, reduced starch syrup, sesame oil, soy sauce, gochujang, basil paste, salt, garlic paste, concentrated lemon juice, hydrolyzed protein/seasoning (amino acids, etc.), thickener (xanthan gum), copper-containing yeast extract, pH adjusting agent, sweetener (sucralose).

Product contains wheat, soybeans, and sesame.  

   

•  Toyo Corp. Soymeat and Vegetable Keema Curry/トーヨーコーポレーション　大豆ミートと野菜でつくったキーマカレー. Ingredients: Vegetables (carrot, potato), sauteed onion (domestically produced), chickpeas, tomato paste, granulated vegetable protein, curry powder, rapeseed oil, reduced starch syrup, garlic paste, salt, ginger paste, hydrolyzed protein, dry tomato, yeast extract powder/seasoning (amino acids, etc.), glycine, thickener (xanthan gum), flavoring, sweetener (sucralose).

Product contains soybeans. 

   

It’s really rare to find vegan bread in a convenience store, but this pretzel doesn’t list anything that can be clearly identified as an animal ingredient  in the ingredient list. It is not clear what the source of the emulsifer or enzymes is. It’s marked on the sign and website that it doesn’t contain any of the top 7 allergens like dairy or egg (except for wheat). •  Pretzel/プレッツェル. Ingredients: Pretzel (wheat flour, vegetable oil, yeast, wheat protein, malted barley flour, salt, sugar, malted wheat flour)/vitamin C, thickener (guar gum), emulsifier, leavening agent, enzymes.

Product contains wheat.

   

These made-in-Italy grissini (Italian breadsticks) were seen in May 2021. 

• Panealba Grissini Breadsticks Onion/グリッシーニ　オニオン. Ingredients: Wheat flour, vegetable oil, onion, brewer’s yeast, malt, salt. 

• Panealba Grissini Breadsticks Pizza/グリッシーニ　ピザ. Ingredients: Wheat flour, vegetable oil, brewer’s yeast, tomato, malt, salt, oregano. 

The package of the Kokubu Foods The Almond Milk Yogurt says “plant-based” in English and “shokubutsusei shokuhin/植物性食品”  in Japanese. It states that plant-based means that no animal ingredients are used at all and that only plant derived ingredients are used: “Plant-based(植物性)食品は、動物由来の原材料を一切使っておらず、植物由来の原材料のみでつくられています。” The press release states that no dairy ingredients were used. Per a customer inquiry in April 2020, the lactic acid bacteria are plant-derived. Photo taken in May 2021. 

• Kokubu Foods The Almond Milk Yogurt/アーモンドミルクヨーグルト. Ingredients: Almond paste (domestically manufactured), fructo-oligosaccharides, inulin (dietary fiber), agar, almond oil.

Product contains almonds.

“100% dairy-free” and “gluten-free” are written in English on the package of Sagamiya Beyond Tofu Greek Style. Since this product is a tofu in a Greek yogurt style, made using nigari (bittern) to thicken it, it probably doesn’t contain any live cultures. Photos taken in March 2021. As of April 2021 it doesn’t appear to be on the Beyond Tofu website anymore, meaning the product is probably on its way out. 

• Sagamiya Beyond Tofu Greek Style, Edamame/枝豆風味. Ingredients: Tofu cream, vegetable oil, salt/processed starch, coagulant (magnesium chloride (nigari)), flavoring, gardenia pigment.

The photo of the following variety of Beyond Tofu, a vegan cheese in olive oil, was taken in May 2021. The ingredient list says that the product has ヤシ油, which can either be coconut oil or palm oil according to Japanese Wikipedia. Regular Beyond Tofu is confirmed to use palm oil according to the blog Sushi Voyage, so we’ve chosen to translate ヤシ油 as “palm oil” in this olive oil version.

• Beyond Tofu in Olive Oil/BEYOND TOFU オリーブオイル漬け. Ingredients: Edible olive oil (domestically produced), edible sunflower oil, fermented soymilk food product (soymilk, starch, yeast extract), starch, processed oil, low-fat soymilk, powdered defatted soybean protein, powdered corn syrup, salt, edible palm oil, basil, red chili pepper/processed starch, pH stabilizing agent, coagulant, carotenoid pigment.

Product contains soybeans. 

Smoked tofu is not always vegan, but occasionally you might spot some that appears not to have animal ingredients. While not exactly cheese, it would go well with crackers, etc.

The following product was spotted in a branch of Natural Lawson in July 2020. It’s a shimadofu (Okinawan island tofu), a firm tofu product.

• Tofu no Hiroshiya Just Like Cheese Smoked Island Koji Tofu/豆腐スクラップのひろし屋　麹×燻製まるでチーズな島どうふ（スモーク）. Ingredients: Tofu (made in Okinawa), miso, koji, rice, sugar, kombu extract, tofu coagulant.

INSTANT RAMEN

The vegan restaurant chain T’s makes instant vegan cup noodles in three flavors, using non-fried noodles and as few additives as possible. T’s vegan cup noodles are reported to contain palm oil by the blog Sushi Voyage.

• T’s Vegan Noodles Hot and Sour Noodle Soup. Ingredients: Noodles (wheat flour, salt, soy dietary fiber), soup (soy sauce, sugars, brewed vinegar, salt, vegetable oil, miso, spice, yeast extract, garlic paste, flavor oil, shiitake extract, kelp powder) toppings (tofu, corn, bok choi, chili)/thickener (guar gum), lye water, caramel pigment, antioxidant (vitamin E), spice extract, red pepper pigment.

Product contains wheat, sesame and soybeans.

• T’s Vegan Noodles Tantan Noodle Soup. Ingredients: Noodles (wheat flour, salt, soybean dietary fiber), soup (sesame seeds, salt, sugars, vegetable oil, yeast extract, broad bean chili sauce, onion powder, spices, flavor oil, sweet soybean paste, protein hydrolyzate, shiitake extract), toppings (bok choi, sesame, granular soybean protein, edamame, spices)/lye water, thickening polysaccharides, caramel pigment, antioxidant (vitamin E), acidulant, red pepper pigment, spice extract.

Product contains wheat, sesame and soybeans.

• T’s Vegan Noodles Soy Sauce Ramen. Ingredients: Noodles (wheat flour (domestically produced), salt, soybean dietary fiber), soup (vegetable oil (rapeseed oil, sesame oil), salt, soy sauce, sugar, protein hydrolyzate, yeast extract, spices, Chinese cabbage extract, kelp powder), toppings (tofu, corn, bok choy)/modified starch, caramel coloring, flavoring, lye water, fine-grain silicone dioxide, antioxidant (vitamin E).

Product includes wheat, sesame and soybeans.

INSTANT NOODLES

The photo below was taken in April 2021. The product page claims it’s Japan’s first RSPO certified ramen (using certified sustainable palm oil).

Let’s look at a few items that look from the package as if they possibly could be vegan, but are not.

Hikari Miso’s oat meat soups, despite using oat meat, contain various animal products, so are not vegan.

The Curry flavor contains pork extract powder/ポークエキスパウダー/pōku ekisu paudā. It’s also listed as pork/豚肉/butaniku. The package also states the product contains dairy components/乳成分/chichiseibun, chicken/鶏肉/toriniku, and gelatin/ゼラチン/zerachin.

    

The Tomato flavor contains chicken extract powder/チキンエキスパダー/chikin ekisu paudā, also marked as chicken/鶏肉/toriniku, as well as cheese powder/チーズパウダー/chīzu paudā, also marked as dairy components/乳成分/chichiseibun. The package also states the product contains pork/豚肉/butaniku.

    

The Onion Consomme flavor contains chicken extract powder/チキンエキスパウダー/chikin ekisu paudā, also marked as chicken/鶏肉/toriniku. The package also states the product contains dairy components/乳成分/chichiseibun and gelatin/ゼラチン/zerachin.

    

Otsuka’s Zero Meat products are not vegan as they contain powdered egg white. The “cheese” version of the burgers does use plant-based cheese instead of dairy, but still has powdered egg white/粉末卵白, funmatsu ranpaku.

The package of the Tomato flavor says they have cinnamon, but for some reason the English-language ingredient list on the website (reproduced here) instead says they contain cloves. There are some other differences between the English-language ingredient list from the website and the Japanese-language ingredient list, but they may be due to local labeling laws. There isn’t anything listed on either that can clearly be said to be of animal origin. 

• Pernes Long Potato Chips, Tomato flavoured. Ingredients: Potato flakes (48%), rapeseed oil, wheat semolina, potato starch, spice mix [sugar, salt, taste enhancer (monosodium glutamate), flavoring (ketchup), herbs and spices (paprika powder, grounded cloves), rice flour, anti-caking agent (silicon dioxide), acidity regulator (citric acid), natural colouring (paprika extract)], salt, antioxidant (rosemary extract).

The Grilled Paprika flavor is not vegan as the Japanese ingredient list shows whey powder/ホエイパウダー/hoei paudā, which is from dairy. 

   

• Producer Potato Chips, Salted/生産者限定ポテトチップス うすしお. Ingredients: Potatoes (not genetically modified), vegetable fats and oils, salt.

Processed alongside products containing wheat, milk, egg, shrimp, and crab.

Limited edition product. Uses only potatoes from Hokkaido. Potatoes are individually checked and in some cases, hand-cut with a knife to make sure there are no green parts inside. No chemical seasoning is used.

   

• Temole Almond Chips, Barbecue and Sea Salt.

Barbecue: Ingredients: Almonds, white beans, almond oil, onion powder, tomato powder, paprika, chili, sea salt.

Sea Salt: Ingredients: Almonds, white beans, almond oil, sea salt.

For both products: Product contains almonds. Made in a facility that also handles: Milk.

Oven baked, gluten-free. Made in Thailand. The Sour Cream flavor of this product (not pictured) is not vegan as it has dairy.

Animal-ingredient-free Biokura macrobiotic cookies are available in a variety of seasonal flavors. They may have cross-contamination from ingredients including egg or dairy from manufacturing. These filled cookies are made by the same company in charge of the Chaya Macrobiotics restaurants. Although the restaurants serve fish, according to their website’s Q&A, all of their manufactured products are 100% plant-derived and don’t use white sugar. Photo taken in March 2021. The flavor on the left of the photo is Maple Rum Raisin and the one on the right is Strawberry. According to their website, Strawberry is a limited-edition flavor. The product pages are specifically marked vegan-friendly in Japanese, ビーガン対応/vīgan taiou.

SALAD DRESSING

In a review of the individual salad dressing packets at a branch of Natural Lawson in May 2021, we were not able to locate any vegan dressings in single-sized packets. All the available single-sized packet options had animal ingredients. 

You might be able to find bottled dressing without listed animal ingredients, though. The Fresh Original Dressing, shown on the left with an “x,” is not vegan as it has skipjack tuna/かつお節/katsuobushi and small dried sardines/煮干/niboshi. However, the Fresh Awaji Island Onion Dressing on the right doesn’t show obvious ingredients on the ingredient list. Photos taken May 2021.

UHA Mikakuto Happy Dates bars may have been replaced in Natural Lawson stores by the very similar Vegan Bars, which are from the same company. There isn’t much space on the UHA Mikakuto website dedicated to the Happy Dates bars as of April 2021 so there’s a possibility they are being phased out altogether.

• UHA Mikakuto Happy Dates Chocolate Brownie/HAPPY デーツ　チョコブラウニー味. Ingredients: Dates, cacao mass, jaggery, roasted almonds, cocoa powder, concentrated date fruit juice, salt (salt from Miyakojima).

Contains none of the 27 allergens.

Chocolate brownie-flavored bars with dates as the main ingredient. Milk, egg, wheat, refined sugar-free. Sweet with the flavor of roasted almonds. Uses salt from an island in Okinawa. The taste is quite chocolatey.

• UHA Mikakuto Happy Dates Fruit Granola/HAPPY デーツ　フルーツグラノーラ味.　Ingredients: Dates, jaggery, cacao mass, granola (oats, brown rice puffs, rye flakes, isomaltooligosaccharide, malt extract, molasses), rice puffs, concentrated fruit juice (dates, raspberries), strawberries, chia seeds.

Contains none of the 27 allergens.

Chia seeds, strawberries, and granola are all included in this date-based bar.

• UHA Mikakuto Happy Dates Rum Raisin/HAPPY デーツ ラムレーズン味. Ingredients: Dates, jaggery, coconut, raisins, cacao mass, rum, concentrated date juice.

Contains none of the 27 allergens.

Rum is included in this date-based bar, making it a sweet treat for adults.

• UHA Mikakuto Vegan Cacao Bar/UHA ビーガンカカオばー．The flavors are rum raisin/ラムレーズン, fruit granola/フルーツグラノーラ and roasted almond/ローストアーモンド.

These bars were also spotted at National Azabu grocery store in Tokyo and NewDays convenience store in February 2021. The website states they are plant-based. The company’s customer service, when asked if the bars were vegan (free of animal ingredients and excluding cross-contamination), replied “yes our products are plant-based and free of dairy, egg, shellfish etc. – which includes all flavours of bars + beverages. NUTS

The Bimi Plus Hi Cacao Walnuts, Japanese Curry Cashews, and Salt Caramel Walnuts are not vegan. The Hi Cacao Walnuts and Salt Caramel Walnuts have dairy and the Japanese Curry Cashews have skipjack tuna fish (bonito) (and the allergy section of the label says they also have chicken).

CHOCOLATE

People Tree, the fair-trade company, makes a line of chocolates marked “vegie.” According to the product pages, the “product contains dairy” warning means (from autotranslate): “* Dairy products are not used as the main ingredient of “Veggie Chocolate Line”. However, the same equipment is used to manufacture some of the raw materials that contain milk components, and it is difficult to completely remove them due to the manufacturing process, so we are alerting people with food allergies.”

The “vegie” flavors of chocolate you may find at Natural Lawson are Bitter Lemon Peel, Bitter Pomegranate, Organic Bitter, Organic Coconut Milk, and Peru 75. They have organic JAS certification.

Other chocolates without the “vegie” label from the same line contain dairy as an ingredient.

Some branches will have Vivani chocolates marked in English as vegan on the package. The Japanese warning that makes it look like they have dairy on the back means, in this case, that small particles of dairy may be present due to processing, not that dairy was used as an ingredient. CANDY

It’s also sometimes possible to pick up imported candies with a vegan certification. These Jelly Belly Chewy Candy Lemon & Orange Sours, Sour Grape & Sours have a vegan certification and say “no animal gelatin” in English on the front of the package. They may also be found at Kaldi. Bontan Ame/ボンタンアメ is a classic Japanese candy. The English-language website states all ingredients are of plant origin.

• Bontan Ame/ボンタンアメ. Ingredients: Starch syrup, sugar, malt sugar, glutinous rice, wafer sheet, concentrated Unshuu mikan juice, bontan juice, starch/flavor, annatto pigment, emulsifier (from soy).

Background and Story of Development: Seika Foods was formerly Kagoshima Kashi Co., Ltd. and was in the business of glutinous starch syrup. One day, our founder saw his factory workers playfully cutting Chosen Ame (also called Gyuhi, a popular local confectionary in Kumamoto) into small pieces with scissors. This scene stuck with him and he came up with the idea of developing Bontan Ame. He added flavor and color to the candy and put them in a box like caramel. At the time, the target competition was Morinaga’s Milk Caramel.
Feature: All ingredients are of plant origin. The main ingredients are starch syrup, sugar, maltose and glutinous rice. Most of the glutinous rice we use is Hiyoku-mochi from Saga or Kumamoto Prefecture. Glutinous rice comes in unpolished. It is then cleaned, further polished and milled at our factory before being soaked overnight in cold water of 10℃ or below (known as “exposure to the cold”). The final process is steaming for two and half hours.
The finished candies are wrapped with a thin, starch wafer (made from potato and sweet potato flour) and they are soft, sticky and chewy. The fresh and sweet-sour flavor comes mostly from citrus fruits grown in southern Kyushu: Bontan extract (oil) from the Akune Pomelo; Sour Pomelo juice from Ichiki-Kushikino; and juice of Kyushu mandarin orange.”

Like other convenience stores, Natural Lawson shops will typically have a variety of fresh, frozen, and dried fruits.

These are prepeeled, sliced apples.

• Apple Sweets/アップルスイーツ. Ingredients: Apples (grown in Japan), trehalose, antioxidant (Vitamin C), calcium carbonate.

Tropical Maria frozen fruit in a cup comes in Grapes, Blueberries, Golden Pineapple, and Mango, with no additional ingredients listed on the package.

Unlike regular convenience stores, which seem to just carry bars and ices in flavors like soda, adzuki bean, or fruit, if you’re lucky, you may be able to find a vegan version of traditional-style ice cream at Natural Lawson. 

The Iceplantze Monaka are both marked vegan in English on the front of the packages. They’re also described as plant-based/プラントベース on the Iceplantze website’s product pages.

The product factory manufactures products containing eggs, milk, wheat, and peanuts.

The Mrs. Freeze Toasted Almond Handmade Ice Cream is not vegan. It’s an example of a product type that is dairy-based with some almonds added in. The back of the package says “ice milk/アイスミルク/aisu miruku” and the first ingredient is dairy/乳製品/nyūseihin. 

Of course, they also stock more traditional style ice candy bars as well. 

The Glico Papico Muscat of Alexandria flavor was seen in August 2021.

Natural Lawson (and Lawson) convenience stores carry a house brand called Uchi Cafe (meaning At-Home Cafe). Some past flavors of the Uchi Cafe Japanese Fruits ice bars are shown here. We have looked at the ingredient list of various Uchi Cafe Japanese Fruits bars and the ingredient lists we have seen have not listed obvious animal ingredients like milk, egg, honey, or gelatin (with the exception of the Furano Melon and White Peach flavors, which contain dairy/乳製品/nyūseihin as an ingredient). Other bars under the Uchi Cafe brand may contain animal ingredients like dairy.

Individual Natural Lawson branches may have a great deal of non-dairy milk or not much. Here are some of the products you might see. • 137 degrees Matcha Green Tea Latte/137ディグリーズ　ウォールナッツ抹茶ラテ. Ingredients: Walnut milk, sunflower seeds, matcha, coconut flower nectar.

• 137 degrees Walnut Milk/137ディグリーズ　　ウォールナッツミルクオリジナル. Ingredients: Walnut milk, sunflower seeds, coconut flower nectar.

• 137 degrees Double Belgian Chocolate with Pistachio Milk/137ディグリーズ　ベルギーチョコピスタチオミルク. Ingredients: Fresh pistachio milk 60% (from whole pistachios), , cashew blend 36%, cocoa from Belgium 2%, organic coconut flower nectar 2%.

• 137 degrees Pistachio Milk/137ディグリーズ　ピスタチオミルク　オリジナル. Ingredients: Pistachio milk, cashew nut milk, sunflower seeds, coconut flower nectar.

Processed at 137 degrees for several seconds to preserve as much nutrition as possible and keep the beverage fresh. Sweetened with organic coconut nectar produced locally and sustainably in Thailand to help revitalize farming communities.

• Almond Breeze Almond Milk, Unsweetened/アーモンド・ブリーズ アーモンドミルク 砂糖不使用．Ingredients: Almond paste (manufactured in America), dextrin, vegetable oil, salt/calcium phosphate, potassium citrate, emulsifier, stabilizing agent (gellan), cellulose, vitamin E.

The following photo was taken in March 2021. It’s one of the three mixed fruit/vegetable/soy drinks called Soy Plus in Kagome’s “Life with Vegetables/野菜生活” line. Kagome does animal testing. When the products launched in 2020, the emulsifier of the Mellow Plain and Berry Prune Mix flavors was reported to be vegetable emulsifier. (Another flavor, Orange Mango Mix, was added afterwards and would presumably have the same emulsifier.) The drinks have 7 grams of vegetable-derived protein.

• Kagome Berry Prune Mix Soy Plus/Kagome 野菜生活Ｓｏｙ＋ベリープルーン Mix. Ingredients: Fruit (apples (imported), pineapple, raspberry, blueberry, lemon), vegetables (carrot, kale, spinach, asparagus, watercress, parsley, pumpkin, lettuce, cabbage, beets, daikon radish, Chinese cabbage, onion, celery), soybeans, prune extract, defatted soybeans, soymilk, salt (from Okinawa Prefecture)/emulsifier, pH adjusting agent, flavoring, cellulose, stabilizing agent (gellan gum), ferric pyrophosphate.

Product contains soybeans and apple.

In 2019, Kikkoman stated that they use beef bone char as a filtering agent for the sugar production process of their soymilks. They also stated they use no other animal-derived agents in the process of making the soymilks. 

Probably their most famous soymilk product is their regular adjusted soymilk, which is used widely across Japan, including in many commercial establishments (coffees and smoothies are often made with this) and vegan items (unless you’re in a vegan restaurant that specifically states they don’t use bone-char processed sugar, in which case they might use something like unadjusted soymilk instead).

At the bottom of the package it reads “植物性たんぱく飲料,” shokubutsu-sei tanpaku inryō, meaning “vegetable protein drink.”

• Kikkoman Adjusted Soymilk/キッコーマン　調製豆乳. Ingredients: Soybeans (Canada or USA) (not genetically modified), sugar, rice oil, sun-dried salt/calcium lactate, emulsifier, thickener (carrageenan), flavoring.

• Marusan Co-Trip Brown Sugar Syrup Soymilk Beverage/Marusan ことりっぷ　豆乳飲料 黒蜜きなこ. Ingredients: Soybean (Canadian) (not genetically modified), saccharides (high-fructose corn syrup, fructose, sugar, brown sugar syrup), soy powder, salt, mirin, yeast extract powder/flavoring, stabilizer (thickening polysaccharide).

Product contains soybeans.

This collaboration product with travel book co-Trip is made with Japanese brown sugar syrup called kuromitsu and kinako soy powder and is meant to taste like a traditional dessert.

This product does not contain any of the allergenic substances that are required or recommended to be labeled.

The oats used in this product use shared harvesting equipment, etc. with wheat. 

   

• Marusan Unadjusted Organic Soymilk/Marusan 有機豆乳無調整. Ingredients: 100% organic soybeans (non-genetically modified). 

Has a soybean solid content of 9%. Uses soybeans from China and America.

Kagome Vegetable Life 100 Smoothies are widely carried. The available flavors vary by season. The products use no sugar, sweetener or thickeners. The company does animal testing. Some products in the line use dairy (fermented dairy/発っ酵乳), so are not vegan.
