Some items have ingredients where the source is unclear such as emulsifiers.
According to the product detail sheet for the following croquettes, information current as of November 2020, the emulsifier consists of glycerin fatty acid ester (グリセリン脂肪酸エステル), so it’s not clear if it comes from an animal source or not.
• Co-op Crispy Coated Hokkaido Irish Cobbler Potato Croquettes/Co-op 衣サクサク北海道男爵のコロッケ. Ingredients: Vegetables (potatoes (grown in Hokkaido))(not genetically modified), onion), processed wheat flour product, sugar, vegetable oil, salt, spice, coating (panko, processed wheat flour product, wheat flour, vegetable oil, salt, starch, soybean flour, sugar, spice)/thickener (guar gum), emulsifier.
Product contains wheat and soybeans.
Made in a factory that produces items that include eggs and dairy components.
These two frozen meals are both different flavors of doria, a Japanese western-style rice casserole with a creamy white sauce. Both were found in a branch of Life Supermarket in Tokyo in August 2020. Both the price tags read “animal ingredients not used/動物性原料不使用.” “Green’s Vegetarian” is also printed on the ingredient panel in English- the name of a popular online shop selling vegan and vegetarian foods.
• Green Culture Soymilk Cream Doria/豆乳クリームドリア. Ingredients: Rice (domestically produced), soymilk, carrot, onion, soymilk cheese (soymilk, rice flour (using domestically produced rice), vinegar, rapeseed oil, miso, salt, beet sugar, starch hydrolyzate, agar, black pepper), broccoli, rapeseed oil, rice flour (using domestically produced rice), wheat-free soy sauce, dried shiitake mushroom, salt, miso, beet sugar, black pepper, powdered kombu, garlic powder, nutmeg/processed starch, coloring agent (turmeric).
Product contains soybeans.
• Green Culture Soymilk Curry Doria/豆乳カレードリア. Ingredients: Rice (domestically produced), onion, soymilk cheese (soymilk, rice flour (using domestically produced rice), vinegar, rapeseed oil, miso, salt, beet sugar, starch hydrolyzate, agar, black pepper), curry roux (vegetable oil (palm oil, safflower oil), rice flour (using domestically produced rice), sugar, curry roux, salt, potato starch, other), carrot, broccoli, granulated soy protein, wheat-free soy sauce, rapeseed oil, salt, powdered kombu, beet sugar, yeast extract/processed starch, coloring agent (turmeric).
Product contains soybeans.
Nippon Gyoza Vegan Gyoza were spotted at Aeon and OK Store supermarket chains in early March 2021. OK Store supermarket chain is in Tokyo and Chiba, Kanagawa, Saitama, and Miyagi prefectures. The product is certified vegan by VegeProject Japan. The package states in Japanese that they’re gluten-free/guruten furī/グルテンフリー.
• Gyoza Keikaku Nippon Gyoza Vegan Gyoza/餃子計画 ニッポンの餃子. Ingredients: Vegetables (cabbage (domestically produced), onions (domestically produced), ginger (domestically produced), garlic (domestically produced)) [Gyoza wrap] (rice flour (rice (produced in Akita Prefecture)), starch, glucose, salt), granulated vegetable protein, protein hydrolyzate, sesame oil, rice oil, alcohol-containing mirin, sugar, salt/processed starch, thickener (processed starch, thickening polysaccharide), trehalose. Contains soybeans and sesame. Sauce: Protein hydrolyzate, brewed vinegar, sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, salt/cellulose, thickener (xanthan gum). Contains soybeans.
The same company also has gyoza in a different package. It’s reported to be sold at Daiei. The ingredient list is the same as the previous product, but without the sauce.

Costco carries Paramount Lentil & Carrot Burgers. The product has the Vegetarian Society “Vegan Approved” mark on the front.

Sanmaruko Hokkaido Croquettes are manufactured in the same facility as items containing egg, dairy, shrimp and crab. They are free of milk and egg per the website (English).
We were not able to review the ingredient list of the pumpkin flavor, only curry, potato, and vegetables.

Ingredients: Vegetables (potato, onion), starch syrup, sugar, panko breadcrumbs, vegetable oil, salt, brewed vinegar, spices, wrap (panko breadcrumbs, wheat flour, vegetable oil, powdered starch syrup, soy flour, granulated soy protein), modified starch, polysaccharide thickener, emulsifier, baking powder.

Ingredients: Vegetables (potato, onion, carrot, corn, green peas), panko breadcrumbs, sugar, starch syrup, vegetable oil, salt, wrap (panko breadcrumbs, wheat flour, vegetable oil, powdered starch syrup, soy flour, granulated soy protein, modified starch, polysaccharide thickener, emulsifier, baking powder.
The grocery store chain Gyomu Super (English) offers a wide variety of inexpensive products, including a variety of frozen sides. The products shown below were all purchased at Gyomu Super.
The following product is made with gobō, greater burdock root, so they’re a kind of fried vegetable stick.
• Fried Gobō/業務スーパーごぼう唐揚げ. Ingredients: Gobō, salt, batter (flour, cornstarch, potato starch, salt, sugar, soy protein, spice, glucose), frying oil (soybean oil)/seasonings (amino acids, etc.), leavening agent.
Processed on the same production line as items containing yamaimo and sesame.

• Sesame Dango/ごま団子. Ingredients: Sweet red bean paste (adzuki beans, sugar, vegetable oil), glutinous rice flour, wheat starch, sesame, sugar, vegetable oil.
Product contains wheat, soybean, and sesame.
Products containing egg, dairy, shrimp, crab, squid, beef, chicken, pork, gelatin, and other ingredients are made in the same production process.
The package of these made-in-Taiwan pancakes recommends them for breakfast or a snack. It also states that they should be cooked as-is (without adding oil) and you can add salt or pepper.
The basil flavor is a “maybe,” as it lists shortening of indeterminate origin. It was found in February 2021 and the package seems to indicate that this particular flavor is new- “new tastes” is printed on the front of the package in English.

Product contains wheat, soybean, and sesame.
• Spinach Cake/薄焼き餅(ビン) ほうれん草風味. Ingredients: Flour, soybean oil, green onion, sesame, spinach, salt.
• Spring Onion Cake/薄焼き餅(ビン). Ingredients: Flour, soybean oil, green onion, sesame, salt.
Vegetable kakiage is a kind of tempura.
• Vegetable Kakiage/野菜かき揚げ. Ingredients: Vegetables (onion, sweet potato, carrot, green beans), batter (wheat, cornstarch, sugar, salt, processed powdered oil, dried sea lettuce), frying oil (soybean oil)/leavening agent, seasoning (amino acids, etc.), coloring agents (carotene, turmeric).
In 2020, the customer service reported that the processed powdered oil is palm oil.
Vegetable Croquettes/野菜コロッケ, also from Gyomu Super, are not vegan. The package says “contains dairy/一部に~乳成分.” Per customer service in 2020, whole milk powder is used in the ingredients (not just present as cross-contamination only).
