These pizza crusts, premade pizzas, tortillas and naan could be handy if you are able to cook/heat your own meals while you are in Japan.
Some products have ingredients where the source is not known, and which may or may not be of animal origin, such as shortening/shōtoningu/ショートニング, emulsifier/nyūkazai/乳化剤, l-cysteine/L – shisutein ensan shio/L-システイン塩酸塩 or margarine/māgarin/マーガリン.

Delisun Thin Pizza Bases were spotted in a branch of Yamaya in February 2021. The last ingredient in the ingredient list, E-920, is noted as possibly of animal origin by Vegan Easy: E-920 is “L-cysteine, L-cysteine hydrochloride, L-cysteine hydrochloride monohydrate – Improving agent
Produced commercially from animal and human hair (and feathers)…however may sometimes be synthetically produced.”

Ingredients: Wheat flour (61%), water, extra virgin olive oil (4%), high oleic sunflower oil, dextrose, raising agents (E-450i, E-500ii), salt, acidity regulator (E-296), emulsifier of plant origin (E-471, from palm and/or rapeseed oil), preservatives (E-282, E-202), flour treatment agent (E-920).

The following five-pack of pizza crusts was found in the frozen section of a branch of the Gyomu Sūpā supermarket chain. It says on the package it’s sold by Kobe Bussan, which owns the Gyomu Sūpā supermarket chain, so it probably can’t be found in other shops, excepting from resellers.
• Napoli-Style Professional Pizza Crust/ナポリ府ピザクラスト. Ingredients: Wheat (domestically produced), vegetable oil, yeast, salt, sugar, malt powder.

PIZZA
As of April 2021, there’s a pizza from Del Sole that’s marked “animal-ingredient-free” in Japanese on the package, 動物性不使用/doubutsusei fushiyou. It’s been spotted at Belc and Aeon supermarkets in the frozen section.
• Del Sole Vegetable Pizza/デルソーレ野菜ピザ. Ingredients: Pizza crust (wheat flour, processed cauliflower, vegetable oil, salt, shortening, yeast, sugar), tomato sauce, bell pepper, zucchini, eggplant, broccoli, edible flavored oil, basil/acidulant, emulsifier, thickener (xanthan gum), flavoring, spice extract.
Product contains wheat and soybeans.
The factory also produces items containing dairy.
Vegan pizzas can also be bought from a few places online.
Fruits Life, which makes a few slices of cake sold in Aeon, one of which is confirmed to contain no animal ingredients, also sells a set of 3 vegan pizzas online. Check our Bread and Bakery Products section for more information on their cake slices.

Green’s Vegetarian, the website and Rakuten Ichiba shop, carries vegan Genovese pizza and Napoli pizza (Naples-style), along with many other vegan products. Be careful when ordering items marked “plant-based” as they may contain milk and egg.

As of February 2021, the vegan Marin Foods pizzas are no longer viewable in their online shop’s vegan section where it shows their other vegan products: margarine, hotcakes/pancakes, and dairy-free cheese. The vegan pizzas may have been discontinued, so if you want to try one, grab one from an online retailer like Karuna before the last of the stock sells out.

Seijo Ishii grocery store has an own-brand naan, but it isn’t clear what the shortening is made out of.

• TopValu Fluffy Hand-stretched Naan/トップバリュ ふっくらもちもち トップバリュ手のばしナン. Ingredients: Flour, vegetable oil (contains soy), shortening, sugar, salt, yeast, bran powder/thickener (guar gum), emulsifier, vitamin C.
Product contains wheat and soybeans.
Products that contain egg and dairy are manufactured in the same factory.
Note that the TopValu almond milk contains pork and it isn’t clear if it’s in the emulsifier or some other part of the ingredients for that product. It is unknown what the emulsifier in this product consists of.
A made-in-Malaysia paratha carried by Gyomu Sūpā supermarket chain and imported by Kobe Bussan, Gyomu Sūpā’s owners, has also been spotted. It is marked as “suitable for vegetarians” in English on the package.
• SK Kitchen Plain Paratha/プレーン パラタ. Ingredients: Wheat flour, margarine, rice flour, sugar, salt, vegetable oil/emulsifier (derived from soy), preservative (potassium sorbate), flavoring, baking powder, colorant (turmeric, carotene, annato).
